Handmade Rugs vs. Machine-made Rugs

Handmade rugs are crafted by skilled artisans using traditional weaving techniques, while machine-made rugs are produced using automated machines. Handmade rugs are typically of higher quality, made from natural fibers such as wool, silk, or cotton, and boast intricate designs and patterns. They are often more expensive due to the amount of time and skill that goes into making them, and they are hand woven in countries with a long history of rug-making, such as Iran, Turkey, or Afghanistan. Machine-made rugs, while equally decorative, are generally less expensive and made from synthetic materials such as polypropylene and bamboo silk. At ECARPETGALLERY, our entire rug collection consists of 100% handmade and hand woven rugs.

Materials & Fibers Used in Handmade Rugs

The quality of a rug is determined by the quality of its components and the craftsmanship involved in its creation. Thus, when searching for a high-quality rug, it is essential to consider the quality of the fibers, dyes, and construction. Handmade and hand woven area rugs are crafted from a wide range of natural materials and these materials can greatly affect the look and feel of the rug, as well as its durability and longevity.

Wool is the most common material used in handmade rugs, as it is durable, soft, and easy to dye. At ECARPETGALLERY, we believe that the best fiber for rugs is by far wool and this is why the majority of our rug collection consists of 100% handmade wool rugs. A low-quality wool rug will outlast the best synthetic fiber (nylon, acrylic, polyester). Moreover, wool is incredible at hiding dust and soil so your rug will look cleaner for longer than other fibers.

Silk is also a popular choice, offering a luxurious feel and a stunning luster. Cotton is often used as a foundation material, providing a strong base for the rug.

We also sell many area rugs made out of a jute — a natural fiber that offers a rustic look and is known for its durability. Just rugs are also a great eco-friendly choice as the crop has minimal water needs and consumes large enough amounts of carbon dioxide that it’s C02-neutral.
