The holiday season is upon us, and there’s never been a better time to embrace the Danish concept of hygge, defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” (Fun fact: this cosy concept actually shares a common etymological ancestor with the word hug, both coming from hugr in Old Norse.) With a whole cultural category devoted to fostering these comforting feelings, it’s no wonder the Danish are some of the happiest people on earth.
