Indian Rugs

Among the world’s great carpet weaving nations, India sets itself apart through careful use of high-quality materials, redefined ... traditional design and scaled production. The origin of Indian carpets goes back to Emperor Akbar who ruled India in the 16th century. Following the Persian model, he introduced Persian workmen and established carpet factories in various key centers such as Agra, Lahore and Kashmir. It is generally believed that from Akbar’s time, a significant trade in Indian carpets sprung up and that the proliferation of production extended over the whole of India. Although much of the carpet production at this time was really only blanket work along with simple flat daris, the craft was laced with the family and civil life of the people. Indian carpets first came to European attention at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and have since continued to capture global appreciation for their aesthetics, representing India’s famed skills in color and embellishment.More

    MORE ABOUT INDIAN RUGS

Our hand-knotted Indian rugs are crafted by skilled artisans who tie each knot by hand. Made from natural materials like wool and silk, each rug is incredibly durable and long-lasting. Classic Indian rug styles such as our Serapi Rug Collection feature deeply rich hues like rust, gold and navy, adding charm and richness to any space. Authentic Agra Carpets and Kashmir Rugs are inspired by Kashan, Esfahan and Kirman designs and beautifully depict Indian royalty through fine floral images and native animals in warm reds, yellows and browns. On the other hand, more modern Indian rug designs are rendered in a monochrome palette whereby the combination of wool and silk enhance the abstract pattern through organic high/low pile. If you are searching for a modern neutral rug browse our Indian Alma Collection.Today, India’s weaving encompasses a range of techniques such as braided, loomed and hand-knotted area rugs. These different weaves result in an array of thicknesses and patterns, as the major weaving houses continue to pioneer in contemporary, designer, and custom carpets. New Indian rugs & kilims fuse traditional techniques with modern day trends such as neutral colors and abstract designs.

How to Maintain Antique & New Indian Rugs?

Collectors of antique and new Indian rugs understand that proper care and regular upkeep preserves and even appreciates the value of their investment. While wool rugs do an incredible job at hiding dirt, these pieces will over time undergo wear and as such accumulate abrasive dirt that if left to fester can damage the rug’s fibers and foundation. This type of damage cannot be undone, and as more and more dirt penetrate the fibers it leads to a loss of color and vibrancy making the rug appear dull. Rather than wait till your rug looks dirty to bring it in for a clean, we recommend you incorporate a few at-home care practices that will help extend the life and sheen of your rug. Regular vacuuming of your Indian area rug will help to eliminate dirt and particles. Firstly, be sure to turn the beater bar off as the aggressive motorized brush can break the surface fibers of your rug. Next, vacuum sideways across the width of the rug and across the direction of the pile. At all costs avoid vacuuming over the fringe as rotating brushes will quickly tear the fringe. If your rug has a thin foundation with a pile, we recommend using an upholstery attachment and vacuuming in the direction of the pile only. Don’t be aggressive and apply too much pressure. The goal is to keep the buildup of dust and grit to a minimum. In general, you want to vacuum the top of your rug every 1 to 2 weeks depending on the traffic they are getting and their location in your home. Every other month, vacuum the backside of the rug as this will help to keep moth and bug activity to a minimum.
