Rug Care Instructions
Like most things, handmade rugs require regular maintenance in order to last as long as possible. This includes periodic vacuuming and rotation.
With new wool rugs, shedding of loose fibres is normal and a natural result of being handcrafted. Shedding will diminish with regular vacuuming, typically after 3-6 months. Do not pull loose ends. Clip them with scissors.
RUG PADS
We highly recommend using a rug pad! Rug pads prevent sliding, shifting and wrinkling. Not only does this help with safety in high-traffic areas but equally prevents premature aging of the rug. In addition, vacuuming is made easier with a rug pad.
At ECARPETGALLERY we offer our signature rug pad constructed from rubber mesh. The ⅛” thick pad serves as an added cushion underfoot.
RUG VACUUMING
Rugs should be vacuumed regularly to remove deeply embedded dirt and prolong the life of your rug. We recommend vacuuming your rug on a low power setting once a week (especially in the first month). It is very important to be careful when vacuuming around the fringes of your rug as they can easily get caught and ruined in the vacuum cleaner.
RUG BEATING
Beating is a traditional way of cleaning a hand-knotted rug. To do this, simply hang your rug outside and shake it to loosen dirt and other particles.
ODOR
During and immediately following the placement of your new rug, there may be a slight odor. Ventilation with fresh air is recommended. Open windows or doors and run the fan of the AC system for up to 72 hours.
RUG STORAGE
The best way to store a rug is to roll it tightly and to wrap it, which will allow for it to breathe and will result in longer life expectancy. To prepare your rug for storage, we recommend the following steps:
- • Lay your rug flat.
- • Starting from the upper left-hand corner, bring the corner towards the center of the rug.
- • Fold the unfolded portion of the rug towards the rug's center, covering the side that is already folded.
- • Grab one of the rug's bottom ends and fold it over, covering roughly 1/3 of the rugs' length. Repeat with the opposite bottom end.
- • Begin to tightly roll the rug toward the rest of itself, rolling until the rug is fully packed together.
- • Tie a piece of string around the center of the folded rug to ensure it stays in place.
- • Wrap the rug in airtight polythene with moth balls and store in a dry place.
SPILLS
Treat any spills or stains by blotting with a dry cloth, and use a common wool cleaning detergent to remove stains. Avoid rubbing or stroking as this can set the stain deeper into the rug. We recommend scraping solids with a blunt knife or a spoon. For hard-to-remove stains, opt for a professional cleaning service.
