Prayer Rugs

Prayer rugs have been used in Muslim countries (which encompasses the whole of the rug-weaving Orient) for hundreds of years. In early mosques ... there was always a stone – the quibla – placed in the wall and pointing in the direction of the holy city of Mecca. Later this area came to be decorated by the representation of an arch-shaped niche known as the a mihrab and this is the shape which is almost universally adopted in prayer rug designs.More
