How to Maintain Antique & New Afghan Rugs?
Collectors of antique and new Afghan rugs understand that proper care and regular upkeep preserves and even appreciates the value of their investment. While wool rugs do an incredible job at hiding dirt, these pieces will over time undergo wear and as such accumulate abrasive dirt that if left to fester can damage the rug’s fibers and foundation. This type of damage cannot be undone, and as more and more dirt penetrate the fibers it leads to a loss of color and vibrancy making the rug appear dull. Rather than wait till your rug looks dirty to bring it in for a clean, we recommend you incorporate a few at-home care practices that will help extend the life and sheen of your rug. Regular vacuuming of your Afghan area rug will help to eliminate dirt and particles. Firstly, be sure to turn the beater bar off as the aggressive motorized brush can break the surface fibers of your rug. Next, vacuum sideways across the width of the rug and across the direction of the pile. At all costs avoid vacuuming over the fringe as rotating brushes will quickly tear the fringe. If your rug has a thin foundation with a pile, we recommend using an upholstery attachment and vacuuming in the direction of the pile only. Don’t be aggressive and apply too much pressure. The goal is to keep the buildup of dust and grit to a minimum. In general, you want to vacuum the top of your rug every 1 to 2 weeks depending on the traffic they are getting and their location in your home. Every other month, vacuum the backside of the rug as this will help to keep moth and bug activity to a minimum.
